In the film version of On The Road, Sam Riley’s Sal is regularly seen wearing a red and black plaid jacket. Today, for the first time in who knows how long, I decided to wear the above shirt. My decision to do so had nothing to do with last nights viewing of the film. Or at least that’s what I first thought. See, the film didn’t do anything for me. As much as I hoped a visual representation of that sacred text would lead to a somewhat gratifying viewing experience, it really really didn’t. Not that it was a bad film, it’s actually quite well crafted for a book that many will argue is unadaptable, it’s just that craftsmanship isn’t quite good enough to arouse the same feelings you feel when reading the book. But it was still Kerouac. It still triggered memories of why it is you love that book. That’s the beauty of On The Road. The cast of High School Musical could put on a production of it and you’d still come away reminiscing. It’s genius and beauty can’t possibly be undone, especially when it’s powerful enough to encourage subconscious outfit decisions.
